The European Graduate School now looks toward its August (Saas Fee) and October (Valletta) sessions. We continue to welcome applications from those who wish to enroll in our degree programs or join us as guests. Our intensive structure allows professionals to pursue their careers while undertaking advanced study at the highest level.

Here are highlights regarding what is to come:

In August, we begin with a special seminar that will be directed by Frederick Moten, with the participation of Stefano Harney and Denise Ferreira da Silva.  Manthia Diawara will join in this discussion and help in focusing its attention on issues in contemporary black thought.  Manthia will then join us again in October in order to link this colloquium with a second discussion with Angela Davis and Gina Dent.

The session features seminars and presentations in August by Peter Szendy, Catherine Malabou, Karen Barad, Branislav Jakovljević, Terry Smith, Elie During, Siegfried Zielinski, Christopher Fynsk and Caveh Zahedi.  We are also pleased to announce that Robert Brewer Young’s seminar on craft  (the third in a very successful series which has traversed topics in philosophy of geometry, philosophy, musicology, and political economy) will offer the occasion for the initial presentation of a quite important engineering and design feat: a “Three-dollar Violin.”  The nature and meaning of this project will be presented to the group as a whole, and participants will be invited to join Robert in making their own conservatory-quality instruments.  Join us as we make even the motif of “craft” sexy.

The October session in Valletta begins with two exceptional seminars, one by Jean-Luc Nancy, the other by a team of six that will explore alternative forms of economic and ecological thinking.  This latter seminar will take its departure from the question of the meaning of blockchain for contemporary economic thought, and proceed to more speculative work on “quantum economics” and the meaning of such modelling for new economies and ecologies.

EGS seminars will also be directed by Keller Easterling, Angela Davis and Gina Dent (as noted above), Terri Geiss, Achille Mbembe and Sarah Nuttal, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Rebecca Comay, Peter Weibel, Thomas Keenan, and a team from Naples led by Anna Lisa D’Amato that will undertake a theatrical event on the nearby island of Comino. Once again, the Malta meeting is shaping up to be a memorable EGS experience.
