New MFA facility opening this fall

10,000 square foot facility provides studios and community areas for graduate students

The Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) School of Art will open a significant expansion and upgrade of resources for their MFA program this fall, transforming the experience of graduate students in art. The new 10,000 square foot graduate facility will provide 18 individual studios, community study and lounge spaces, administrative offices, and a flexible-use space for varied programming. 

The new facility will bolster the program’s emphasis on an interdisciplinary, experimental, and research-based approach to art making by creating a cohesive graduate community with many opportunities for both structured and organic collaboration. The new space brings the program’s 18 graduate students together in one facility with generous, naturally-lit individual studios that support a wide-range of artistic practice, from large scale sculpture and painting to experimental animation, creative coding, and more.

For broader interactions, the flexible-use space will support varied coursework, group critiques, roundtable seminars, and public programming. Seating up to 70 people, the space is easily configurable and is readily accessible for public events. 

Housed within one of the most respected research universities in the United States, the MFA program at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Art provides its students with a challenging and supportive context in which to expand and develop their work and thinking as artists. With generous tuition scholarships, guaranteed graduate assistantships, four core faculty members, an additional 16 tenured and tenure-track professors within the school, and opportunities for critique from visiting artists, curators, and critics, the MFA program fosters intensive intellectual relationships with each of its Masters candidates.
