The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) seeks to fulfill the position of Associate Director of Research–three-year contract, full-time (35hrs/week).

The CCA is an international research centre and museum, founded in 1979 on the conviction that architecture is a public concern. It aims to foster discussion and dialogue in an international research-oriented context. This intense research activity is fueled to a great extent by CCA’s growing collection, one of the world’s foremost holdings of publications and architectural design documentation whose guiding purpose has always been to be a leading voice in advancing knowledge, promoting public understanding, and widening thought and debate on architecture, its history, theory, practice, and role in society today. 

Research at the CCA investigates the multifaceted discipline of architecture and yields new insights into past, current, and future developments within and related to the field. It promotes critical thinking and scholarship capable of changing the way the built environment is understood.

Reporting to Chief Curator, the Associate Director of Research is responsible for reinforcing the strategic vision of the CCA and guiding and overseeing the research component of the institution. The incumbent provides scholarly and strategic leadership for CCA research activities, and supervises the Study Centre’s activities and programs.

The Associate Director of Research is also responsible for scientific, logistical, cultural, and public activities involving CCA research and the Study Center, including coordination with other CCA divisions. The Associate Director, Research develops the CCA’s relationships with allied institutions and the scholarly community at large.

Required job qualifications:
Education: PhD in architecture or art history, or equivalent in research experience and academic publications
–Number of years of relevant work experience: 5 to 7 years developing curatorial and research duties, as well as a range of academic publications
–Excellent knowledge of spoken and written French and English; advanced writing skills in at least one of the two languages
–Knowledge of architecture and related fields
–Communication and team-work skills, renowned technical expertise, and a focus on results
–Good adaptation, innovation and leadership skills
–Research or teaching experience at the university level; extensive research in the field of architecture, understood in its broadest sense
–Familiarity with the international architectural teaching and research community
–Working knowledge of other languages an asset
–Work experience in a comparable research-based institutional setting an asset
–Excellent organization and planning skills
–Excellent interpersonal skills
