From June 27 through October 25, 2015, Museo Jumex will present three diverse projects: a micro-exhibition of the work of Jerzy Grotowski, a theatre director who greatly influenced contemporary performance practices; an exhibition that draws from the Colección Jumex; and a comprehensive exhibition of the artist, activist and ecologist Gustav Metzger.
Passersby: Jerzy Grotowski
27 June–12 July 2015
Passersby: Jerzy Grotowski explores the experimental theatre work of Polish director Jerzy Grotowski (1933–99), who in his travels through Mexico influenced the dramatic arts while exploring new methodologies and approaches to theatre, integrating anthropology, ritual and “spatial movements.”
Grotowski came to Mexico in 1981 and 1985, following in the footsteps of Antonin Artaud. During his travels he was influenced by different cultural practices such as Haitian Voodoo, yoga and Huichol rituals, and assembled a group of followers who keep his technique alive today.
The exhibition is the first in Museo Jumex’s Passersby (Pasajeros) series that presents biographical micro-exhibitions underlining the importance of foreigners passing through Mexico who have been influential in the development of the national artistic discourse.
Series curated by José Esparza Chong Cuy & Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio.

We Must Become Idealists or Die. Gustav Metzger
18 July–25 October 2015
The first solo exhibition in Mexico of the work of influential artist and activist Gustav Metzger, We Must Become Idealists or Die. Gustav Metzger features works from 1959 to the present. Cornerstones of the exhibition include his manifestos from 1959 to 1969, the Destruction in Art Symposium of 1966 and his Three Years Without Art 1977–1980. These projects are a fundamental starting point for introducing the artist’s concerns with urgent issues including social inequality, nuclear weapons and environmental degradation. In conjunction with the exhibition, the museum will present a symposium on extinction on October 3.
