The Film Society of Lincoln Center presents the second edition of Art of the Real, its annual festival spotlighting artists and filmmakers who expand the boundaries of nonfiction. Organized by Dennis Lim and Rachael Rakes, the festival features a main slate of New York premieres, along with a thematic program, Repeat as Necessary: The Art of Reenactment, and a career retrospective, The Actualities of Agnès Varda

The closing-night program of essay films features Jenni Olson’s The Royal Road paired with two new shorts from Mark Rappaport. Art of the Real’s main selection showcases new work from Peggy Ahwesh, Alain Cavalier, Edgardo Cozarinsky, Sarah Francis, René Frölke, Luo Li, Basim Magdy, Nicolás Pereda, Masa Sawada, Ben Russell, and others. Older films in the main program include the North American premiere of a recently uncovered video work by Derek Jarman, Will You Dance with Me?, and a screening of Afrique 50 in tribute to the late René Vautier. Many featured artists will present their work in person.

Repeat as Necessary: The Art of Reenactment is a retrospective of films and videos that use reenactment as a method of investigation and a means of creating art from the archive. Highlights include works by James Benning, Cecilia Dougherty, Juan Downey, Jean Eustache, Harun Farocki, Simon Fujiwara, Jill Godmilow, Jean-Paul Kelly, Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley, Jenny Perlin, Elisabeth Subrin, Peter Watkins, Ming Wong, and others. The films and videos in this spotlight trace a partial history of reenactment as its own medium, an act of repetition that often leads to revelation.

The Actualities of Agnès Varda showcases a unique selection of the legendary French director’s inventive and experimental documentaries, diary films, anthropological sketches, docufiction hybrids, and essay films. The selection of Varda’s work in this year’s Art of the Real is an essential introduction to her extensive oeuvre, from her first feature La Pointe Courte, to her California Films including the cult favorite Lions Love, radical documentaries Black Panthers and Ulysse, the enigmatic Vagabond, and the widely acclaimed The Gleaners and I. The pioneering filmmaker will introduce and discuss her work at several screenings.

With generous support from the SundanceNow Doc Club and Janus Films.
