Interreligious meeting place
September 29–November 5, 2021
Located in Vienna’s Seestadt Aspern area, the Campus of Religions is a collaboration between eight religious denominations. This interfaith centre will welcome all religious institutions—and those sceptical of religion—as well as the general public.
Seestadt Aspern in the north-east of the city is one of Europe’s largest urban development zones. An area with heart and soul—with spaces for all aspects of day-to-day life—will take shape in the vibrant 22nd district between now and its scheduled completion in 2028. High-quality residential space for more than 20,000 people—and a similar number of workplaces—will be created in several stages. Innovative design concepts underpin this sustainable urban development, which combines high quality of life with a dynamic, powerful economy.
Covering around one hectare, the Campus of Religions is a site where the Catholic, Evangelical and Orthodox churches, as well as Sikhs, Jews, Moslems, Buddhists and members of the New Apostolic Church can cultivate their own identities, while also working together. It will bring together people from various cultures and religions, who are committed to promoting faith, respect, diversity and ideological tolerance. Alongside the interfaith University College of Teacher Education of Christian Churches Vienna/Krems, the campus is designed to be a meeting point that encourages dialogue between religions, science and education, with as few barriers to access for the general public as possible.
The exhibition at the Ringturm outlines the architectural vision behind the Campus of Religions—the only peace project of its kind worldwide—and showcases the designs submitted by a total of 42 architecture firms from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Poland and France that took part in the urban planning competition for the development. The three winning projects and the recognition award winners form the focal point, with the overall winner—the design by Viennese architects Burtscher-Durig—taking centre stage.
