On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Kunstgebäude, where the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart resides, the 35th anniversary of the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart and the first anniversary of the off-space Lotte, the three institutions open their exhibitions simultaneously, turning their celebration programs into a joint critical triangle.

Apparatus Criticus & Locus
Apparatus Criticus intends to operate as a conceptual tool to investigate contemporary forms of critical distance and how diverse artistic languages approach to their subjects of reality. Critical apparatus, which is apparatus criticus in Latin, refers to a collection of notes, variant readings, and other matter accompanying a printed text, and positions exhibition making as an open script in relation to the practice of process based writing. Metaphorically speaking, Apparatus Criticus takes the exhibition form as primary source material that accompanies an edition of a text, and experiments on the possibilities of developing an exhibition grammar through several strategies, which are borrowed from textual criticism. Parallel to this exhibition process, Locus appeared as a responsive idea to Apparatus Criticus. As an allegory of exhibition space, Locus attempts to arouse curiosity in an audience through the artworks and provoke imagination on the possible scenarios in which the artworks have responded to utopias, curious narratives, politics and the sociability of nature.
Apparatus Criticus and Locus simultaneously run together on the exhibition floors of Künstlerhaus Stutgart prescribing a parallel reading as dual exhibitions, and Footnotes at Lotte reveals their research process through artworks, drawings, sketches, references and footnotes.

Hesitating, faltering, lapsing, pausing, wavering in decisions, treading water, lacking direction: all of the above are moments and states characteristic of “zaudern” (dithering), which in a thoroughly economized world are considered disruptive, if not downright threatening. Artists not only refer to motives, but also to methods of dithering. They work with broadly ramified systems of reference—ones that range “from the hundreds to the thousands”—and also with methods of repetition, deferral, and permutation. They are dealing with the digressive in lieu of the purposeful, with the unexpected in lieu of the calculable, with the equivocal in lieu of the definite.
Parallel to On Dithering the Kunstverein opens the exhibition Autopoiesis curated by Didem Yazıcı in the framework of the Kunstverein’s new program Querungen (Crossings).
