We miss you!

All of us at Bar Laika hope you’re healthy, safe, and staying home. Our friends at museums and galleries can move their exhibitions online, but what good is a virtual bar? We can’t wait to reopen and share more drinks, food, music, and films in person with you.

In the meantime we’re working on a few things to send your way. Today, Keith Fullerton Whitman inaugurates the Satellite Mix series with Acid Causality, a blend of recordings made in his home in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The Satellite Mix series features musicians who have performed or will be performing at Bar Laika as part of the Satellite experimental music program. Pour yourself a drink and listen here.

Stay tuned for more…

Yours,
Laika

Acid Causality (60:19), a new mix by Keith Fullerton Whitman
Whitman is a composer and performer of electronic music. He is currently exploring a new framework of geographically and thematically aligned live electronic music under the banner Redactions, as well as performing contemporary revisions of his classic Generators and Playthroughs frameworks. He has performed and released music under several aliases, most notably Hrvatski.

In his own words, Whitman describes Acid Causality:

“Shortly after returning to New York City in October 2018, I began recording a series of extended pieces applying analogue computing concepts to generate fluid, evolving values that were mapped to formal elements (pitch, rhythm, timing, spatialization, filtering, etc.) normally driven by fixed-value sequencing.

This mix presents edits of a series of four sessions forged between November 11, 2018 and November 27, 2019: First, a suite of Vocoded kick-drums and sample and hold canon melodies run through a sentient resonator network; then a six-voice wavetable canon with requisite acid bassline and pitched-down drums; then a suite for hand-percussion and modeled metallophones; then a high-feedback karplus-strong wash.

These were immaculately conceived from the tools on hand and the methodologies of Norbert Wiener, Maatrameru, et. al, although stylistic/traceback shout-outs are in order to Stephan Wittwer’s score for Fischli and Weiss’ Der Rechte Weg (1983), to Mikel Rouse’s Quorum (1984), and to Steve Poindexter’s Computer Madness (1989).”

Satellite is an experimental music series curated by Sanna Almajedi.
