Marking a culminating moment in the history of the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) on the verge of its 150th anniversary, and punctuated by a global pandemic, a singular generation of SFAI MFA artists come together in an online exhibition documenting works across media including: painting, photography, printmaking, digital technologies, installation, video, film, and performance.
Celebrating the final MFA exhibition in the school’s stellar history, this cohort of resilient artists adapted remarkably to the online format in lieu of their gallery exhibitions.
We invite you to view this exhibition showcasing their works here.
Artistic and conceptual inquiries range widely—from addressing the immediacies of this contemporary moment in its traumas of the Coronavirus, the collapse of global economies, and their impact on mobility and climate change, to new possibilities. For these students, these are not abstractions but are firmly grounded in the worlds they have inherited and which they are now entering as professional artists. Their inquiries address these concerns through fluent movements across multiple mediums that build upon and extend their histories, reflecting how art may function as a tool for depicting one’s place in the world, as much as for problem-solving and for social engagement.
This online exhibition demonstrates the incredible breadth and dedication of our graduating class, and how we can come together as viewers and producers to transform this moment of uncertainty into a platform for new growth and interaction. The San Francisco Art Institute is proud to bring its annual MFA exhibition online to connect with audiences far beyond San Francisco, California.
