The Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros is pleased to announce the second edition of the Cisneros Foundation Seminar, titled The Betrayal of the Contemporary—Activations, Suspensions and Projections of the Contemporary in Art.
Designed as a multidisciplinary space for the study and dissemination of art, the seminar will reflect on today’s artistic production, that which is usually called the contemporary. The Betrayal of the Contemporary’s model combines the symposium with Pecha Kucha, a short presentation format in which participants’ work is presented in a simple and informal manner.
Renowned historians, curators, art critics and intellectuals whose work has contributed to a new critical thinking in Venezuela and the world will participate. Among the speakers are curators Mariangela Méndez, Nato Thompson, Claire Bishop, Zuleiva Vivas, Maria Lind, and Pablo León de la Barra; artists Suwon Lee, Muu Blanco, Luis Molina-Pantín, and Mario García Torres; and writers and cultural commentators Sergio Monsalve and Mari Montes.
The seminar will also have an active online component, including a series of virtual interventions from an international network that includes Ileana Ramirez (Tráfico Visual); Inti Guerrero (TERO/ética); Carmen Carrión (ICI), Ericka Flores (Lugar a Dudas), Eduardo Abaroa (SOMA), and Manuela Moscoso (Capacete). These respondents will connect to the auditorium via Google Hangout to comment on each block of lectures, and will convene their own audiences to follow the live broadcast. Join us at one near you!

About the CPPC
Founded in the 1970s by Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and Gustavo A. Cisneros, the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) is one of the core cultural and educational initiatives of the Fundación Cisneros. Based in New York City and Caracas, Venezuela, the CPPC’s mission is to enhance appreciation of the diversity, sophistication, and range of art from Latin America; advance scholarship of Latin American art; and promote excellence in visual-arts education. The CPPC achieves these goals through the preservation, presentation, and study of the material culture of the Ibero-American world—ranging from the ethnographic to the contemporary. CPPC activities include exhibitions, publications, and grants for scholarly research and artistic production.
Lugar a Dudas (Cali, Colombia) isa nonprofit independent space whose purpose is to promote and disseminate artistic contemporary creation through an articulate process of investigation, production and confrontation.
TEOR/éTica (San José, Costa Rica) is an independent project and nonprofit art space focusing on research and dissemination of contemporary artistic practices. Since its inception, TEOR/éTica has emerged as one of the most dynamic art spaces in Costa Rica.
SOMA (Mexico City, Mexico) is the result of a group of artists’ initiative to bring together their efforts and develop a unique platform within the cultural realm. SOMA is a program for the professionalization of artists, a forum for conferences, discussions and weekly events, a system of residencies for national and international artists, and an international summer program for artists, curators and art historians.
CAPACETE (Río de Janeiro, Brazil) has the purpose of exposing and producing unpublished conceptual and contextual works. It documents its activities and serves as a starting point for the self managing of a group of national and international artists.
Independent Curators International (NYC, USA) produces exhibitions, events, publications, and training opportunities for diverse audiences around the world. ICI connects emerging and established curators, artists, and institutions, to forge international networks and generate new forms of collaboration.
Tráfico Visual (Caracas, Venezuela) is an online platform where contemporary art and today’s cultural dynamics circulate and connect to offer audiences a link in which they can find information on artistic and cultural activities in Caracas and all along Venezuela.
