The MMK Talks are an annual event series presented by the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main with a different thematic focus each year. The third series of the MMK Talks will be devoted to “The Artists.” Six prominent artists who are represented in the MMK Collection have been invited to talk about their work. The artists will each hold a conversation with a partner of their choice, someone who has played an important role in their career or has a significant connection with their work.
Working in the areas of photography, installation, painting and concept art, the selected artists represent a cross-section of the MMK Collection.
On six evenings between October 2012 and January 2013, the artists will discuss their perspectives on museums as well as their collaboration with directors and heads of collections and how it influences their work.
For the first MMK Talk on 5 October at 7pm, the photographer Juergen Teller will meet with the TV host and author Charlotte Roche. Juergen Teller chose Charlotte Roche as his conversation partner because he highly appreciates her publications and anticipates that the discussion with her will be a stimulating and discursive exchange. Roche, for her part, is a professed fan of Teller’s works.
Juergen Teller has been represented in the MMK Collection since 2010 with his Helmut Lang Backstage Series (1993–2000). He made a name for himself with, among other works, his unvarnished photographs of the world of fashion as well as his photographs of the deceased singer Kurt Cobain of “Nirvana” fame. Teller is one of the most important photographers of the present. He lives and works in London.
Charlotte Roche began her career as a host for the German music station VIVA. The publication of her novel Feuchtgebiete (Wetlands) followed in 2008. She is presently collaborating with Jan Böhmermann to host the Roche & Böhmermann TV show on ZDF.kultur. The Grimme Prize recipient lives and works in Cologne.

Juergen Teller has been working in London as a fashion photographer and artist since the 1990s. He is represented in the MMK Collection with his Helmut Lang Backstage Series (1993–2000). Charlotte RocheisaTV host and author who lives in Cologne.

Hans-Peter Feldmann in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist
Hans-Peter Feldmann lives and works in Düsseldorf. His most important works in the MMK Collection are the series Die Toten 1967–1993 (The Dead) of 1996–98 and Das Kinderzimmer (The Children’s Room) of 2002. Obrist is a curator, critic, and co-director of the Serpentine Gallery in London.

Katharina Fritsch in conversation with Julian Heynen
Katharina Fritsch lives and works in Düsseldorf. Her legendary Tischgesellschaft (Company at Table) of 1988 is in the MMK holdings. Julian Heynen is the Artistic Director for Special Projects at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. In 2003 and 2005 he was the curator of the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

Thomas Scheibitz in conversation with Beate Söntgen
Thomas Scheibitz lives and works in Berlin. The major solo exhibition Thomas Scheibitz. One-Time Pad is on view at theMMK from September 2012 to January 2013. Beate Söntgen is an art historian and, since 2011, a professor of art historyat Leuphana Universität Lüneburg.

Andreas Slominski in conversation with Mario Kramer
Andreas Slominski lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg. A large number of his major works are to be found in the MMK Collection. Mario Kramer is Head of Collection at the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main.

Carsten Höller in conversation with Daniel Birnbaum
Carsten Höllerlives and works in Stockholm. Among the MMK’s holdings are his works 220 Volt (220 Volts) of 1992 and Lichtwand (Light Wall) of 2002. Birnbaum, a curator and critic, has served as director of the Moderna Museet Stockholm since 2010. Previously he was the rector of the Städelschule Frankfurt.
A collaboration between the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main and the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule.
Admission is free of charge.
The talks will be held in German except Carsten Höller in conversation with Daniel Birnbaum.
