Issue 5 out now
The fifth issue of frieze d/e introduces a bold new design.
On the occasion of dOCUMENTA (13), editor Jennifer Allen surveyed former documenta artistic directors—Roger M. Buergel, Okwui Enwezor, Jan Hoet & Bart de Baere, Rudi Fuchs, and Manfred Schneckenburger—together their opinions offer a comprehensive historical background for this year’s edition.
Mirror, Mirror…: Raphael Gygax looks back at the career of Manon, one of the best-kept secrets of the Swiss arts scene, from the 1970s to the present.
Digital Dandy: Luca Cerizza tests the principles of appropriation and repetition in the works of Michael Riedel. Riedel contributes an exclusive artist project both in print and online.
Also featured in issue 5: Christy Lange takes a closer look at the photographs of Alexandra Leykauf; Dominikus Müller sees a reawakening of Nature in contemporary art and music; whilst Pablo Larios considers what artists are doing with branded commodities in the age of social networks and Photoshop.
In our regular columns: Jan Verwoert looks at different approaches towards lying; Barbara Preisig visits CERN, where a new artist in residence program has just been introduced; and Simon Rees asks what is next for Vienna after the closing of its most prominent project space, COCO. Also, Geeta Dayal traces the history of the MP3 to Germany via Jonathan Sterne’s forthcoming book MP3: The Meaning of a Format.
Plus, coinciding with the Berlin exhibition ‘Art and Press,’ Kito Nedo examines the relationship between artists and the tabloids, while Andreas Schlaegel visits a skate ramp, made by the late Michel Majerus at the turn of the millennium. As part of the regular series ‘In a Word,’ Italian artist Carla Accardi and Dutch design studio Metahaven both explore the idea of ‘transparency’ and, in the first of a new series ‘Trouvaille,’ frieze d/e picks out favourites from the ebb and flow of culture: a book, a cd, a shoe, and a gun.
On the back page: ‘Das Ding,’ artist and writer Brian O’Doherty chooses The Sedan Chair as a special object of significance from his working and living environment.
With 21 reviews, including: Berlin Biennale 7; Marcel Duchamp at Lenbachhaus Munich; and Tobias Madison at Karma International, Zurich. As well as exhibitions from: Berlin, Bregenz, Brussels, Cologne, Frankfurt, Geneva, Karlsruhe, Lingen, Lübeck, Munich, Nuremberg, Remagen, Salzburg, St. Gallen, Vienna, and Zurich.
