The Gallerist Programme is a new project initiated by de Appel arts centre and The Fair Gallery and made possible by its Supporting Committee and Founding Members. It connects to the Fair Gallery’s initiative to examine and create new forms of collaboration between galleries in an increasingly expanded field of operation. Joining forces with de Appel arts centre for its expertise of organising its Curatorial Programme since 1994, the partners have established a new curriculum specifically aimed to the needs of aspiring gallerists, in collaboration with the programme’s Advisory Committee.
As a prelude to the Gallerist Programme, de Appel arts centre and the Fair Gallery are organising a short intensive workshop, timed to take place in conjunction with de Rijksakademie Open Studios and ‘Capital A’, the first Amsterdam Art Weekend. The workshop is connected to a public lecture opening up the discussion to a larger audience.
Keynote lecture by Uta Grosenick, “Gallery Histories”
Uta Grosenick, author of International Art Galleries (Thames & Hudson, 2005) will give a keynote lecture on the history of the International Gallery System, offering an overview of gallery models and profiles since 1945 and how these relate to artists’ careers.
Intensive workshop
The workshops take place over two days, each day starting with an introductory speech, followed by the presentation of a case study that lays the foundation for an interactive assignment between course attendants and tutors. The days end with a discussion between participants and external experts offering their feedback about the above-mentioned assignments.
The first day of the workshop is dedicated to one of the crucial moments of presentation and promotion for a gallerist: the Art Fair. What are the relationships between the parties present at the fair (artists, collectors, curators, press)? How do you work with or around the available models of display? How does the temporary presentation at the fair relate to your stable and longstanding interests? Looking back to the practical conditions and opportunities of the art fair, the second workshop day, takes a closer look at the systems of the art market.
Workshops are conducted by: Jennifer Flay (Director FIAC), Suhail Malik & Andrea Phillips (Goldsmiths, University of London), Francesco Manacorda (Director Artissima), Massimo Minini (Galleria Massimo Minini), Olav Velthuis (Economic sociologist), amongst others.
How to apply for the workshop:
Applicants are requested to send a short biography (300 words) and a statement of intent (500 words). Please specify your interest in working in the profit field.
How to register for the keynote lecture:
The keynote lecture is open to everyone; reservations are appreciated but not required. Reservations will be held for a week and are to be confirmed by payment. Reservations via: reservation@deappel.nl
Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation. De Appel will organise preferred rates at a hotel in Amsterdam for workshop participants.
Note: we hope to create a diversity in the group of participants, based on their geographical location, as well as levels of experience and education. The result of the selection does not necessarily reflect future decisions to be made in the jury selections for the full year course.
