Dohee Kim, Jaehyeog Choi, Joohyun Kim: MMCA ARTISTIC PLAYGROUND

MMCA ARTISTIC PLAYGROUND is a project located in the outdoor space of MMCA Gwacheon, an art museum in nature, as part of a strategy for its further development into a specialized art museum centered on families as well as strengthening the role and functions of its Children’s Museum.

MMCA Gwacheon brings to life a “roofless, participatory art museum” by creating a space for artistic play in nature and providing related programs with the themes of art, nature, and play where visitors can experience and learn through expanded museum education in its outdoor space.

By running the engaging project that sheds light on the attitude towards life and instills the value of coexistence between art and nature in the post-COVID-19 era and beyond, the outdoor space will serve as a platform for museum education and an opportunity to reflect on art and nature, ecology and humans.

Through the project, MMCA Gwacheon is transforming itself into an art museum that is: roofless with expanded functions as an art museum in nature, participatory, not merely contemplative, with engaging artistic play features, and; open for all, which is diverse, inclusive and without boundaries.

With these missions, MMCA ARTISTIC PLAYROUND welcomes visitors, which is composed of the following spaces: The Field of Artists, Art Floor, Pine Tree Trail, and Sky Roof.

Plus, site-specific installations designed to reflect on art and nature, such as The Field of Artists–Sangoranggil by artists Dohee Kim and Jaehyeog Choi, and Three Pillars by artist Joohyun Kim, are displayed in the museum’s outdoor sculpture garden. The visitor-participatory installations invite children and families to engage in hands-on experiences and fun play where they can encounter and discover multiple facets of contemporary art and nature.
A variety of related permanent programs are available for visitors throughout the year.

Through MMCA ARTISTIC PLAYGROUND, the museum aspires to help its next generation of visitors grow with art and connect with nature, embracing shared value of nature and art, and to establish itself as a museum that embodies art engagement, art making, and art spaces for the cultural practice of mankind.
