EAST by SOUTH WEST, the title of curated by_vienna 2011, describes a geographical conundrum—a where?—to be solved using the compass of contemporary art. In 21 curated exhibitions in Vienna’s leading galleries, the project presents art from an expanded “Eastern European” space that includes the panoply of post-communist states and Turkey. The geographical dimension reflects upon Vienna’s status, at different moments in European history, as an advocate for culture and contemporary art for those territories especially since 1989. The project hones on regional geography at a time, and in a world, largely governed by global mechanisms and ways of thinking.

curated by_vienna, now in its third year, commissions co-operations between renowned international curators and contemporary art galleries in Vienna. Following the successful model established in 2009 and 2010, 21 leading international curators, with track records of working with artists from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, have been invited to develop special exhibitions for each of the partner galleries.

The participating curators span three generations and are presenting a range of exhibitions that delve into the historical formations of art made in the territories being examined; consider the work of some of the most influential artists of the periods of radical experimentation and protest associated with the various anticommunist undergrounds; as well as assaying new artists, new trends, and new conceptual and critical developments impacting upon the international contemporary art scene.

Experienced as a whole, curated by_vienna 2011: EAST by SOUTH WEST, will enable audiences to chart intersections, connections, and diversions across the exhibitions and the sociopolitical geography they encompass – a space that features Vienna.
