The exhibition “West Arch – a new generation in architecture” shows 25 architecture studios from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany which all respond to present demands and problems in an experimental and unconventional way. The exhibition will present both spaces that have actually been realized as well as spaces in planning or considered possible.

Characteristic interests, strategies and solutions are shown and emphasize aspects of production, materials, research and education, new media and technologies, sponsorship, support and competition, inspiring examples and networks. The specific and speculative nature of a new generation of architectural thinking and architectural strategies is of special interest.

We assume that a pragmatic, partly ironic approach is predominant: acceptance of the factual leads to a new realism. Putting existing structures to a new use is a strategy that is not only helpful from an ecological and economical point of view but also creates new aesthetics. Theory and practice are not conceptually separated. In times of economical crisis the production of ideas is redeployed to what is possible.

The topics of the exhibition are further explored in a comprehensive programme of lectures, workshops, panel discussions, films and a two-day symposium. Exhibition and supporting programme aim for a discussion of contemporary architectural production as well as the establishment of new networks in a heterogeneous region. The exhibition is curated by the Ludwig Forum and the office modulorbeatambitious urbanists and planners.

The project is supported by Landesinitiative StadtBauKultur and the Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung, Stimulieringsfonds Architectuur, Atelier Rijksbouwmeester, Consu¬late General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
