Franz Erhard Walther, Work as Action
October 2, 2010–February 13, 2012
This presentation of works by Franz Erhard Walther will feature a selection of Handlungsstücke (Action Pieces) from the early 1960s, including the complete presentation of 1. Werksatz (First Work Set), 1963–69. Acquired by Dia in 1978, this work comprises fifty-eight fabric elements, or “instruments,” meant to be activated by visitors to the museum, drawing attention to the body as material form.
Koo Jeong A, Constellation Congress
November 5, 2010–June 26, 2011
Koo Jeong A’s exhibition for Dia will unfold at three locations: Dia:Beacon, the Hispanic Society of America, and The Dan Flavin Art Institute. At Dia:Beacon, Koo Jeong A will present a new iteration of the work A Reality Upgrade & End Alone (2003–09), an outdoor sculpture that will be installed in the grass field behind the museum.

Performance and Screening of Works by Max Neuhaus

An event to celebrate the work of Max Neuhaus and the recently published book Max Neuhaus: Times Square, Time Peace Beacon. David Shively will perform a selection of Neuhaus’s early concert realizations, followed by a special screening showing rarely seen films of and by Neuhaus, including Phill Niblock’s 1967 Max and a recently discovered video documenting Drive-in Music.

DIA:BEACON
Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries opened in May 2003 as the home for Dia Art Foundation’s distinguished collection of art from the 1960s to the present, including Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, John Chamberlain, Walter De Maria, Dan Flavin, Michael Heizer, Donald Judd, On Kawara, Imi Knoebel, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Bruce Nauman, Gerhard Richter, Robert Ryman, Fred Sandback, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, Andy Warhol, and Lawrence Weiner.
Situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Beacon, New York, and easily accessible by train or car, the museum occupies a former Nabisco box-printing facility that Dia renovated with artist Robert Irwin and architect OpenOffice. Dia:Beacon’s expansive galleries comprise 240,000 square feet of exhibition space illuminated by natural light. In addition to its collection, the museum presents temporary exhibitions and diverse public and education programs.
