Two-day symposium:
October 29th and 30th, 2010
Venue
Felix Meritis, Amsterdam
Day 2 : Who cares? Case studies of art, curating and healthcare.
Speculations on the Cultural Organisation of Civility investigates contemporary notions of civility in relation to the realities of the healthcare sector. Reflecting on current debates about care and citizenship in contemporary art, philosophy and politics, this two-day event provides a platform to discuss progress and issues in these fields. Artists, curators, theorists, healthcare practitioners and the audience are invited to question and rethink the role of contemporary art in its ameliorative function.
While the first day draws on care as a political and philosophical concept, the second day focuses on the artistic and curatorial response to the politics of healthcare provision. Theories and case studies come hand in hand to provide a significant and radical overview of the subject. Prior and during the symposium, a series of events will also take place across the city, including expert meetings, art interventions and film screenings.
Confirmed international guests and participants (up to this date) include: BikvanderPol, Artists, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Beatriz Colomina, Architecture historian and theorist, Professor and Founding Director of the Program in Media and Modernity at Princeton University, USA; Tom van Gestel, Curator at SKOR, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Edi Rama, Mayor of Tirana, Albania and chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania; Sally Tallant, Head of Programmes at the Serpentine Gallery, London, United Kingdom; Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA and former Chief Advisor on Political Strategy to the British Prime Minister, London, United Kingdom.
Speculations on the Cultural Organisation of Civility is the first symposium of the series of symposia Actors, Agents and Attendants organised and curated by SKOR in collaboration with Markus Miessen and Andrea Phillips.
