This October in New York ICI is organizing The Curatorial Intensive for emerging curators internationally who want to learn about curating in the public realm. From an open competition, 10-14 individuals will be selected to study with some of today’s leading practitioners working within the rapidly growing field known as public practice.
Teachers and advisors for this program include Nicholas Baume (Director and Chief Curator, Public Art Fund); Claire Bishop (Associate Professor, Ph.D. Program in Art History, CUNY); Dan Cameron (Founding Director, Prospect New Orleans); Kate Fowle (Executive Director, ICI); Mary Jane Jacob (Professor and Executive Director of Exhibitions, SAIC); Richard Marshall (Curator, Lever House); and Nato Thompson (Chief Curator, Creative Time).
Participating in a rigorous schedule of workshops, discussions, critiques, and individual advisement sessions, as well as visits to local institutions and conversations with artists, participants will be trained to develop their ideas into full proposals. Topics discussed will include logistical issues such as commissioning, producing, and installing projects in public space, as well as concepts ranging from site-specificity to social and political engagement.
After the New York phase of the project is complete, ICI will continue working with participants long-distance to finalize their proposals for publication on ICI’s website, so broad publics, as well as the hundreds of institutions with which ICI works, can view the final proposals.
Application Guidelines: Applications must include a 300-word description of a contemporary art project in the public realm that the applicant would like help in developing. Submissions should include a preliminary concept or key idea, and name(s) of artist(s) the applicant is considering. Also required is a current resume, plus a short statement of intent that outlines why the applicant wants to participate in this program, as well as an example of a recent exhibition that has made an impact on the applicant.
Application Deadline: August 13, 2010
Fees and Scholarships: The Curatorial Intensive program fee is $1,500. Participants are responsible for covering travel and accommodation expenses. In its commitment to make The Curatorial Intensive accessible to individuals from diverse economic backgrounds, ICI offers generous scholarship packages, subsidizing or eliminating program fees and travel expenses of four participants.
