20 artists curating exhibitions
in 20 galleries
Opening: Thursday, 6 May 2010, 6 – 10 pm
After a successful start in 2009, the ambitious Viennese project “curated by_vienna” will take place for the second time in 2010, opening May 6.20 artists will curate exhibitions on the topic “art&film” in 20 galleries in Vienna.
curated by_vienna encourages systematic cooperation between galleries and curators. In 2010, the focus is on the artist as curator. Each of the 20 participating Viennese galleries has selected one artist, who will curate a show on “art&film” in the gallery spaces. Thus, 20 exhibitions running in parallel will allow visitors to compare how 20 artists explore the theme of art&film as curators and which other artists and artworks they select for their respective shows. Visitors can thereby gain valuable insight into both artistic and curatorial practices. The curating artists are encouraged to present the unexpected and new, but also to include artists living and working in Vienna, given the city’s longstanding fascination with art and film and their multiple interfaces.
art&film: In 2010 curated by_vienna will focus on references to cinema in art. In view of the long tradition of cross-fertilization between art and film, what still interests artists today about the moving picture and its representations? What opportunities are presented by the use of moving images in the gallery space? What foundations do new works build on; what role is played by issues of historicity and narration, by projection, installation or immersion, Hollywood and experimental film, feature films and sitcoms?
The range of artistic works today that make use of the filmed image or pointedly reference it is enormous. Documentary approaches are just as significant as performative or conceptual routes. Likewise to be considered are references to film as a pop and mass phenomenon, i.e. as a symptom or indicator of social change.
curated by_vienna 2010 attempts a comprehensive dissection of what is currently a particularly virulent web of relations in the cultural field – an exciting analysis that puts up for discussion currently prevailing institutional conditions as well as aesthetic explorations of space and time, and the quest for artistic and social scopes for action.
