The MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main is seeking to fill the position of curator
BesGr. A 13 BBO

The MMK ranks among the world’s leading museums for contemporary art and has established a firm place for itself in the international museum landscape in the 19 years since its founding. Today the museum’s collections include over 4,500 works of art dating from the 1960s to the present. The MMK stands out from other museums of contemporary art by virtue of the quality, diversity and distinctive profile of its collection and due to its ambitious exhibition programme.

The MMK is seeking to fill the position of curator and assistant director as soon as possible. The position involves a wide range of responsibilities including administrative and representational duties as well as helping devise and organise the museum’s programme of exhibitions and events.

The administrative duties involve human resources management, representing the museum’s interests vis-à-vis various municipal agencies and authorities, and coordinating processes related to infrastructure and the exhibition programme. Furthermore, as assistant director you will be in charge of developing and maintaining contacts with the museum’s partners and sponsors in the private sector, raising funds from private donors and sponsors, and organising special events and cultural excursions. In close cooperation with the director, you would develop an overarching concept and the programme of exhibitions and events for the MMK. You would also be a member of the museum’s team of curators.

For the position advertised we require someone with a PhD or an equivalent degree in art history and with several years’ experience of working in a managerial capacity in a comparable cultural institution. The successful applicant will have gained practical experience in museum management and in handling personnel and budgetary responsibilities. We require someone with excellent knowledge of German, familiarity with international exhibition practice and an extensive network of contacts with other professionals in the field and with international cultural institutions. The position also requires an excellent command of both spoken and written English.

Please note:
If Civil Service law provisions are not met, employment under salary class 14 TVöD is possible. Part-time employment is possible. Disabled applicants will be given preference over non-disabled applicants with equal qualifications.

The position is to be filled immediately. If you have any questions regarding the position itself, please contact our secretary Ms Gemmer on +49 69 212 388 19; questions regarding financial issues should be directed to Mr Gawrich on +49 69 212 356 10.
