The exhibition El pasado en el presente y lo propio en lo ajeno explores how the ghosts of memory (in the words of sociologist Avery F. Gordon) haunt the present and influence the way we understand and build it.

It wishes to analyse the interrelationship between territory and memory, how they influence one another and how they are resignified in a to-and-fro operation, based on the work of a series of artists firmly grounded in the territory and its social and historical connotations. Space, whether this be geographical, urban, architectural or mental, is cross-contaminated and cross-fertilised by memory. Indeed, there are many signs that speak to us of the more or less recent past and which somehow explain our surrounding environment. Some are none too evident, yet they are there, on a secondary physical layer or in the collective unconscious. Others, on the contrary, are so common, so much on the surface that they go unnoticed because we live with them on a day to day basis and are so familiarised with them.

The exhibition, featuring the work of some 20 artists, explores the memory of the place, the past of a territory, but also the existence of similar experiences in other geographical locations.

LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial is a space for artistic exchange. It is set up with the purpose of establishing an effective alliance between art, design, culture, industry and economic progress and the goal of becoming a space for interaction and dialogue between art, new technologies and industrial creation. It throws a special spotlight on production, creation and research into art concepts still being defined.
