On 10 March 2005 the Red Bull Hanger-7 at Salzburg Airport presented itself with a new exhibition concept as an innovative platform and support program for emerging artists. Ever since its creation, the impressive glass and steel building has been conceived as a place of synthesis of creativity and technology, of cuisine and art. During 2005 and 2006 Hangar-7 presented three group exhibitions involving works by artists living in Austria, China and Spain

With the fourth edition of the HangART-7 exhibition New York Contemporary: Art Times Squared Hangar-7 is dedicating itself not to a whole country, but exclusively to the city of New York, the Big Apple, as the metropolis has been known for more than 100 years, in allusion to its prospering atmosphere and the possibility of the wildest dreams coming true there. Now, in Salzburg, with the aid of the works of these seven artists, a spotlight is to be focused on this city, a powerfully effective but clear insight into the latest productions of figurative, narrative painting. Seven artists from a city with almost as many inhabitants as Austria, selected by seven curators in New York, explain the energies that are bubbling in this city, the different visions that are born in it, the different means by which dreams are lived, ideas realised and hopes fulfilled or buried.

Alongside the exhibition catalogue, Stefan Sagmeister and his team in New York will be producing a newspaper for the exhibition. Sagmeister, as an Austrian who has lived in the Big Apple for many years, is currently considered to be one of the most internationally influential graphic designers.
