Visiting Professor of the XII edition of the Advanced Course in Visual Arts is Marjetica Potrc, artist and architect from Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Fragmented City is a seminar, that focuses on the European territory and especially on the Western Balkan regions, symbol of territorial and architectural fragmentation. During the course each of the three weeks is dedicated to a different theme: Territories, Architectures, and Natural Resources. The workshop a laboratory of artistic and theoretical experimentation, traditionally conducted by important international artists is directed by Annie Ratti since 1995, and organized and curated by Anna Daneri, Cesare Pietroiusti and Roberto Pinto. The initiative is under the patronage of the Municipality of Como.

The 20 selected young artists that will attend the course in Como from July 3rd to 22nd are: AiPOTU (Norway), Giorgio Andreotta Calò (Italy) and Timea Anita Oravecz (Hungary), Dafne Boggeri (Italy), Vesna Bukovec (Slovenia), Candice Jee (Australia), Alice Cattaneo (Italy), Ulrika Ferm (Finland), Gunndís Yr Finnbogadóttir (Iceland/Holland), Michael Fliri (Italy), Emma Houlihan (Ireland), Tara Kennedy (Ireland), Inmi Lee (Korea), Emanuel Licha (Canada), Jonatah Manno (Italy), Alison Miller (USA), Jennie Moran (Ireland), NeuroTransmitter (USA), Gastón Ramírez Feltrín (Mexico/Italy), Matteo Rubbi (Italy), Eugenio Tibaldi (Italy), Nicola Toffolini (Italy).

The School of Art – Faculty of Built Environment Art & Design della Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia, the Skuc Gallery in Lubiana (Slovenia), the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen of Rotterdam (Holland) and the Svenska Konstskolans Vänner (SKV), Nykarleby (Finland) offered grants for the young artists of their Countries.

The CSAV students will be involved in daily workshop activity with Marjetica Potrc, in in-depth theoretical studies with the curators, and in a performance programme, and are also invited to two lectures open to the public. The first one, Thursday July 13th is lectured by Kyong Park, architect and urbanist, and the following, Thursday July 20th, by the artists Stalker. For the first time the course features Corso Aperto (Open Course), a day during which the artists will present their work (with videos, performances and handing out material) creating an occasion to come in contact with the audience in Como. This event takes place July 8th, from 5 pm until late into the evening, in the Ticosa building where most of the CSAV activities are based.

Thursday July 6th at the Ticosa, for the opening of her solo exhibition Fragmented City – expressly entitled after the course, for the strong relation with the themes on which the students will work on – Marjetica Potrc will also give a speech. The artists works focus on the analyses of city development, energy resources, watering systems and urban agriculture experimentations.
Four projects are on display: in the Ticosa building, a selection of twenty colour pictures that illustrate some of Marjetica Potrcs previous projects and Genesis, a video shot in India and the United States in April 2005 (commissioned by the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo where its on permanent display) showing two communities the Barefoot College and the Catherine Ferguson Academy that meet their own energy needs by combining local knowledge with advanced technology.
Kinematic Roof, a wooden structure in the area outside the Ticosa, with a movable fabric covering. The installation can be used during the day as an open air work-area for the students, while at night it becomes a screen where videos can be shown; Spain (2005), one of the most famous videos by the Slovene artist documenting the water-war erupted between the two Spanish provinces Castiglia La Mancia and Murcia, will be screened here.

Rising above the Kinematic Roof is a site specific work inspired on the Balcony with a wind turbine project presented at the 2004 Liverpool Biennale: a solar panels station fixed on a industrial ladder produces energy to be used by the students for operating their computers, transforming the workshop into an ecological autonomous no-impact system.

Marjetica Potrcs ability in creating interaction between different issues and themes has been internationally recognized, and her works have been part of important international group exhibitions, among which: San Paolo Biennale, Brazil (1996), Skulpturprojecte in Münster, Germany (1997), Manifesta 3 in Ljubljana, Slovenia (2000) and Venice Biennale in 2003. Marjetica Potrcs solo exhibitions were held at the Guggenheim Museum, New York (2001), the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2001) and at the MIT List Visual Arts Centre, Cambridge Massachusetts (2004).In May 2006 she inaugurated a double solo exhibition with the Argentinean artist Tomas Saraceno, at Portikus in Frankfurt. In 2000 she was awarded the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize.

The end of course exhibition, Fragmented Show, presenting the works conceived by the young artists during the seminar, takes place in Milan from the 10th to the 28th October 2006. The exhibition is curated by Anna Daneri and Roberto Pinto, with the support of Artegiovane Milano and in collaboration with Comune di Milano Settore Giovani, Viafarini, Careof , and the Neon CampobaseGallery. The course activity is documented by two publications: a book on the Visiting Professor, published by Actar, and a magazine conceived during the workshop, in collaboration with Nero Productions.

The Visiting Professors of the past editions were: Joseph Kosuth, John Armleder, Allan Kaprow, Hamish Fulton, Haim Steinbach, Ilya Kabakov, Marina Abramovic, Giulio Paolini, Richard Nonas, Jimmie Durham, Alfredo Jaar.
