Stories Within Stories
October 16, 2021–March 6, 2022
The speech act is central in Bouchra Khalili’s works. In front of her camera, individuals share their own experiences, both of historical and current events. The works in her upcoming exhibition Stories Within Stories contain a variety of stories about citizenship, colonialism, exclusion and resistance.
The artist allows the many different micronarratives to combine into larger stories. In films and photo collages, Khalili deals with issues of solidarity and collective liberation. The exhibition reflects the artist’s interest in grassroots media and how speech, typography, poetry and street theatre amplify voices that would not otherwise be heard.
Bouchra Khalili (b. 1975, Casablanca, Morocco) is a French-Moroccan artist based in Berlin, Germany. She works primarily with film, photography, installation and publications. Khalili has had solo exhibitions at, among other museums, MoMA, New York; MACBA, Barcelona; Jeu de Paume, Paris; Secession, Vienna, and participated in international festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta, the Sharjah Biennale and the Sydney Biennale. Khalili is Professor of Artistic Strategies at the Angewandte University, Vienna.
The exhibition Bouchra Khalili / Stories Within Stories is produced by Bildmuseet, Sweden, with support from the Institut français de Suède.
