Stipendium is an exhibition jointly organized by Neue Kunst in Hamburg and the Kunstverein in Hamburg.
For the first time the recipients of the Neue Kunst in Hamburg travel and exhibition grant will present their work at the Kunstverein in Hamburg. Stipendium brings together the six Hamburg based artists selected for the 2005/6 edition of this prestigious travel bursery. Tjorg Douglas Beer, Ulla von Brandenburg, Maren Grimm, Annette Kelm, Daniel Megerle and Dirk Stewen were each selected for their outstanding work.
Founded in 1987, Neue Kunst in Hamburg, was originally conceived with the aim to support emerging artists in Hamburg through a series of exhibitions organized by established curators from outside the city. In 1996 the focus of the grant was changed to realize the inquisitive and exploratory desires of young artists. For each grant cycle five to six artists receive financial support to live and work for a maximum of six months in a foreign destination of their choice. Over the last twenty years over sixty artists have received the support of Neue Kunst in Hamburg. Stipendium is the ninth exhibition in this sequence and the first time that the exhibition has appeared in this venue.
While the exhibition will take the format of a group show, the focus will remain on the individual artists and their specific practices. In six inter-related presentations each artist will include new works as well as significant past production. The artists selected media range from film, video and photography to drawing, collage, and installation.
Mixing pop cultural references with an acute critique of contemporary society Beer will present an extensive installation consisting of various sculptures and collage made of unorthodox materials such as duct tape, tin foil and cardboard. Presenting two recently produced 16mm films, a new wall drawing and a series of smaller wall based works, von Brandenburg will continue her exploration of the historical iconography of the fin de siecle period. A large-scale video projection by Grimm investigates the history and current reality of an iconic building in the centre of Brussels, designed to house the offices of employees of the Belgium federal government this structure has been left vacant until today, a peculiarly empty presence in the centre of the city. Kelms presentation focuses on a recent series of photographs that reveal her unique combination of formal, historical, and contextual references. Megerles presentation of nine drawings continues his personally inflected vision of a narrative invention: isolated figures wander a landscape dotted by modernist architecture and bleak natural forms. Stewens carefully constructed and delicate ensembles comprise of a wide range of media and materials and develop his investigation of formal construct and its potential critical operations for the viewers perceptual experience.
The selector of this years recipients and the curator of the exhibition is Jens Hoffmann, Director of Exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
A publication distributed by Revolver, Frankfurt will accompany the exhibition including texts on the exhibiting artists by Walead Beshty, Massimiliano Gioni, Jan Silberberg, Robin Simpson, Gigiotto Del Vecchi and Andrea Winkler as well as an outline of the overall curatorial process by Jens Hoffmann.
