Z33 is an arts centre that, through multidisciplinary projects, focuses on contemporary art and design. It is situated in the former beguinage of Hasselt.

In the houses of that beguinage, arts centre Z33 has created an exhibition circuit on the relationship between fine and applied arts.

The fact that a not insignificant part of the beguines income derived from industrial activities is a happy coincidence (because it fits in perfectly with the new use of the beguinage): The beguines created craftwork, which they then sold. They developed independent economic activity to provide for their maintenance. In many cases the work was weaving and all manner of clothes making. But also, their “enclosed gardens” can be considered as true spaces for “installation art” even before the term was coined.

In their wake there must be a place for new installations combining design / applied art with contemporary art. With the exhibition No. 11 ON PEOPLE AND THINGS curator Koos Flinterman and Z33 want to abolish the division between art and applied art, to remove the strict boundary between art and artistic crafts, to abolish the aversion to crafts in the art world. At the same time, the exhibition launches a new quest for the relationship between people and things.

This close relationship between man and thing, in all the possible means of expression is the main theme of No. 11 ON PEOPLE AND THINGS. Together, the 39 “cultural inventors”, present an exhibition where young meets old, design meets art, past meets present.

Lucy Orta and the Beguinage houses, her call for social intercourse, the clothing by Raf Simons, the 17th-century architecture of the Beguinage and the site specific architectural installation by Krijn de Koning They cross-fertilise the past with the present, and traditionally-made objects with fleeting mental images.
