Who does not know that illusion of feeling that you have experienced a completely new situation before? The moment of clear-sightedness only lasts fractions of seconds but leaves behind a powerful and unnerving impression. The tenses seem to merge together and future and past overlap. It is not only that we become aware of a seemingly past experience but we also gain the sense that we have seen into the future.”Déjà vu” is a subject well suited to art. Film is an especially good medium to vividly translate the sense of replay in “déjà vu” and can effectively convey the sensation of memory tricks. Pictures also provide a good opportunity to express this phenomenon. In contrast to “déjà vu”, the reproducible picture captures a fleeting moment from the present and thus records a past happening. These synchronisations of past and present, presence and absence, seeing and remembering, and surprise and recognition are characteristics not only of “déjà vu” but also of reproducible images.

The exhibition will draw together positions exclusively from contemporary art. A catalogue of 204 pages will be published by Schlebruegge, Vienna in conjunction with the exhibition with a comprehensive catalogue of full colour images and texts by Henri Bergson, Heike Maier, Gerhard Neumann, Peter Krapp, Beat Wyss and Thomas Trummer.
