The exhibition is an attempt to look at Polish contemporary art from the perspective of artistic images, images created by artists themselves. Focused on contemporary means of self-presentation it comprises mainly artistic images of the last two decades. It includes works of art representing traditional media (painting, sculpture, photography) as well as video art, computer animation and performances with the participation of the artists themselves.
The look at images formed on the basis of different artistic languages and ideologies is dictated by the need to recognise the various issues that lie beneath. What images and auto-presentations of artists do we deal with in contemporary art? How does a contemporary artist create his image, what personalities does he adapt, what face does he show to the public? What attitudes lie behind the ever present and perceptible need to mark ones presence? To what extent do contemporary artists yield to the temptation of an individual mythology, how often do they give up their own image in favour of cultural models? Within what range of experiences do they perceive their presence?
The exhibition in Zacheta is an attempt to position contemporary images in a broader cultural perspective, in the context of the 20th century traditions and their 19th century references, against the background of modernist and postmodernist shifts of values in Polish culture, and with reference not only to the specific issues in Polish history, but also to the global historical and artistic processes.
