A UNIQUE ANTHOLOGY OF ESSAYS AND ARTWORKS CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF INIVA
inIVA, the Institute of International Visual Arts, London, celebrates ten years of success in the visual arts with a major new publication. Changing States features the work of Isaac Julien, Mona Hatoum, Steve McQueen, Stuart Hall, Sonia Boyce, Geeta Kapur, Chris Ofili, Aubrey Williams, Louise Bourgeois, David Medalla, Cedric Price, Okwui Enwezor, Sarat Maharaj, Yinka Shonibare, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Chen Zhen, Jimmie Durham – and many more artists, critics and curators.
Changing States is a unique anthology. As a compendium of inIVA’s groundbreaking exhibitions, debates, publications, research and multimedia, it shows for the first time the full spectrum of inIVA’s extraordinary work from 1994 – 2004.
Organised by thematic chapter, Changing States maps some of the most pressing cultural and political issues of our time: nation, technology, identity, postcolonialism, sport and the metropolis, amongst others. A series of artist pages create a visual narrative for the shifting cultural framework of the decade. Clear-cut texts introduce each chapter and sit beside new writing from leading critics and cultural theorists, alongside reprints of classic, much sought-after essays.
inIVA was created in 1994 as a new kind of visual arts agency. It emerged out of the artistic and political initiatives of the ‘new internationalism’ and the Black Arts movement of the 1980s with a remit to, in the words of Professor Stuart Hall, ‘bring artwork in from the margins of invisibility, from misunderstanding and neglect, and into the mainstream.’
Changing States continues inIVA’s track record of issuing high quality publications. Combining vital criticism, a timeline of events, glossary, superb colour plates and excellent design, this is a vital resource for anyone interested in international developments in contemporary art.
