MICA’s Studio Art Low-Residency MFA is pleased to announce the appointment of new program director Fabienne Laserre. Additionally, three new renowned faculty will be joining the program for summer 2022, bringing diverse studio practices and new energy to this premier low-residency MFA program. The Office of Graduate Admission at Maryland Institute College of Art is currently accepting applications for graduate study beginning in the summer and fall of 2022.

Fabienne Lasserre exhibits her abstract, free-standing, double-sided paintings in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally—including Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY; Parisian Laundry Gallery, Montreal; Palazzo Costa Tretenerro, Piacenza, Italy;  Safe Gallery, New York; and 315 Gallery, New York; Ceysson de Bénétière, Luxembourg; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, TX; and Museo de Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia. Fabienne’s 2021 solo show, Eye Contact, at TURN Gallery in New York, and was reviewed by Anthony Hawley in artpapers. In 2019, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and prior to that received the Saint-Gaudens Memorial Fellowship and a Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program award. Fabienne lives and works in Brooklyn NY.

Howard Sizemore el-Yasin is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator, whose art practice focuses on materiality and performance, while investigating marginality and value structures, perceptions of everydayness, as well as racial and gender identities. Based in Connecticut, where he coordinates the Teaching Fellows program at Yale University, Howard exhibits nationally. 

Nadia Hironaka creates films, videos, public artworks and immersive installations, often working in collaboration to include other artists, musicians and composers. Nadia’s practice embraces research and experimentation across moving-image culture and mass media idioms, Hironaka builds counter-mythologies and alternate or parallel realities.

Nadia and artist-collaborator Matthew Suib have been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Pew Fellowships in the Arts, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Their work has been widely exhibited both domestically and abroad at venues including, Fondazione MAXXI (Rome), New Media Gallery (Vancouver), The Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), UCLA Hammer Museum, and PS1/MoMA. Nadia’s recent exhibition Field Companion premiered on PBS State of the Arts in October 2022.

Jackie Milad is a Baltimore City-based artist whose mixed-media abstract paintings and collages address the layers, history and complexities surrounding multi-ethnic identity. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, including Harvey B. Gantt Center (Charlotte, NC), Grizzly Grizzly (Philadelphia, PA), The Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, MD), Baltimore Museum of Art (Baltimore, MD), Arthur Ross Gallery University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA), and Museo de Arte de Mazatlan (Mazatlan, Mexico).  Jackie is a multi-year recipient of the individual Artist Grant from Maryland State Arts Council and in 2019 was named a Janet & Walter Sondheim Prize Finalist and a Robert W. Deutsch Foundation Ruby Grantee. She is currently represented by SOCO Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina and De Buck Gallery in New York, NY.  Jackie also maintains an active curatorial practice, and is a proud mom to her son Piero, and sighthounds, Leica and Ootini.
