Liverpool Biennial 2004 Waldemar Janusczcak, The Sunday Times (26 September 2004)
“One of the things I really like about the Liverpool Biennial is its refusal to parade before us the same fashionable international favourites who pop up in all the other biennials. Experiencing this show involves relentless exploration: traipsing around the city and getting to know its faraway corners …”
With more then 50 venues spread across the city Liverpool Biennial encourages visitors to explore not only the art works but also Liverpool to inevitably see the relationship between artworks and the city.
From the World Heritage site at Albert Dock to tower blocks in suburbia Liverpool to old, disused warehouses the venues are as unusual as the artwork they host….
Participating venues include:
FACT (Centre for Art & Creative Technology)
Coupling heady romanticism with technical rigour, dive into the 10 screen video installation, Lovers by the Sea, by acclaimed young artist Yang Fudong from Liverpool’s sister city Shanghai. In Gallery 2, there’s Jill Magid’s mesmerising project Retrieval Room which re-uses evidence from Liverpool’s 242 CCTV surveillance cameras to create a compelling personal diary and an enthralling portrait of the city.
Bluecoat Arts Centre
The UK’s oldest arts centre and the hub of the city’s visual arts. Here, inside and outside, all the Biennial programme strands mix and cross over. Pick up a leaflet for the 10 week series of Live Art events. Enjoy the re-enactment of Roy Roger’s and Trigger’s visit to the Adelphi hotel in 1953; witness headbanging to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
The Independent District
Here you find warehouses transformed into gallery and art spaces. With a host of evening performances and galleries open until midnight at the weekend, you’ll encounter lively, intriguing, sometimes playful but always absorbing shows in Independents 04. Here too is Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2004 – the showcase for young emerging artists selected from UK art schools .
Tate Liverpool
On the seaward corner of Albert Dock is Tate Liverpool, host to 25 artists’ work from International 04. Participation is a theme here. Play the “how to be a successful curator” game by Navin Rawanchaikul; experience motherlove at Yoko Ono’s ‘participation wall’; or go for a whirl in Valeska Soares’ infinity ballroom…
the Walker
is home of the National Gallery of the North’s amazing collection. Immerse yourself in the John Moores 23, the pick of contemporary painting from across the UK. The top prize of GBP 25,000 doesn’t reflect the pricetags, so you don’t have to resist if you fancy owning one of the winning paintings.
Other venues are
Open Eye Gallery, Loop Gallery, Arena Studios, Jump Ship Rat, Static Gallery and much more
