Do the Liminal Space!

School of Visual Arts presents Do the Liminal Space!, an exhibition of animations, prints, videos and interactive installations by 15 MFA Computer Arts students and alumni. Curated by Rob Campbell (MFA 2013 Fine Arts), department systems administrator, and Angelica Vergel, director of operations, the exhibition will be on view from Wednesday, October 27, through Friday, November 19, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City. Do the Liminal Space! demonstrates those unknown moments when undergoing periods of transition. The artists in this exhibition courageously explore themes of movements within landscape, the body, words and the uncharted. We invite viewers to take a deep breath, be still with the ambiguity of the obscure and do the liminal space!

Student Ash Choi’s Says Hello is a playful multimedia print consisting of an original robot design saying hello to local horses. Rimm, by 2018 alumnus Adelfino Corino, was generated by placing an original painting on a displacement map created with a pornographic video. The figures are abstracted through this process and are exhibited as a print that has been mounted on a panel and painted. Student Claudia Tay’s The Space You Occupy is an interactive projection in which a field of particles respond to reveal the space of the viewer.

Artists in this exhibition also include MFA Computer Arts students Maria Gudjohnsen Sedlacek, Boning Li, Gerard Muro, Shaoxiong Song with Zhen Liu, and Leyan Jesseter Wang, and alumni Santiago Castaño (2005) in collaboration with Simón Mejía/Bomba Estéreo, John Cinco (1998), Trish Classe Gianakis (1999), Linda Loh (2021), Emilio Ramos (2021) and Yalan Wen (2020).

The SVA Flatiron Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 10am to 6pm, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. 

MFA Computer Arts
The MFA Computer Arts program emphasizes creative experimentation and a multidisciplinary approach to making art with computers and emerging technologies. Dedicated to producing digital artists of the highest caliber, the department guides each student in the development of a personal artistic style in a course of study that is individually tailored to meet his or her needs.
