ARTECONTEXTO is a new quarterly publication intended to foster debate, to lend greater visibility to Spanish artists on the international art scene, and to serve as a new bridge between the art worlds of Spain and Latin America, with a particular focus on new media and net-art.
The publisher and editor of ARTECONTEXTO is the noted Spanish curator and critic Alicia Murria, who says that “the profound changes now occurring in the world of artistic creation call for new ways of thinking and writing about art. Artists’ use of formulas borrowed from other fields demands a thoughtful analysis, and new and different tools of interpretation. We aspire to address and reflect this complexity, and to do so we have opted to create a space in progress, which operates both as seismograph and detonator.”
Artist and writer Ana Carceller is senior editor of the new magazine, and critic Santiago B. Olmo is a staff writer/reviewer. Eva Grinstein is Latin America coordinator.
Published in a single Spanish-English edition, ARTECONTEXTO covers new developments in the art world, and includes reviews of exhibitions, feature articles, and interviews. A special section entitled cibercontexto covers net-art. Each issue will carry an extensive dossier about a particular subject. In the first issue this dossier is dedicated to art made for public spaces, which is explored in an article by Paloma Blanco. The dossier examines the work of artists Minerva Cuevas, Rogelio Lopez Cuenca, the Argentine collective Grupo de Arte Callejero [“Street Art Group”], Jose Osorio, and Regina Galindo, among others. Contributors include Hans Ulrich Obrist, Agnaldo Farias, Daniel Garcia Andujar, Uta L. Rendl and Heinz-Norbert Jocks.
