FOCUS: SPAIN

The January-February issue of Flash Art is out now, with a special focus on Spain. Harald Szeemann, fresh from organizing “The Real Royal Trip / El Real Viaje Real” for New York’s P.S.1, assesses recent Spanish and Latin-American Art, while Rosa Martinez and Octavio Zaya discuss the state of independent curating in Spain today. Maria Jose Balcells gets under the surface of the Spanish art scene to find out what’s been working there (and what hasn’t) in recent years, while Michael Workman pays Spanish-born artist Inigo Manglano-Ovalle a visit at his studio in Chicago. John Welchman gets to grips with the work of Yoshua Okon, the self-described “detonator of social codes,” while Peio Aguirre converses with Jon Mikel Euba. Aguirre has also been busy investigating Ibon Aranberri’s exploits in Basque country caves. Juan Antonio Alvarez Reyes is consumed by the work of Ester Partegas, and Paco Barragan tells all about his touring exhibition “Antirrealismos: Spanish Photomedia Now.”

Craig Garrett grapples with Collier Schorr on the eve of significant exhibitions of her work in New York and London; Giovanni Carmine manages to track down the fleet-footed Urs Fischer; Francesca D. Shaw interviews Tobias Rehberger about his current projects; and Igor Zabel gives us the lowdown on the Slovenian art scene. Fischer and Schorr provide the January-February issue’s two cover images.

In the news, Gabriela Salgado gives us a bittersweet taste of the 8th Havana Biennial, Sonia Campagnola takes a look round the new Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Matt Price runs through the recent New York auctions, and Michele Robecchi speaks with Ute Meta Bauer about the forthcoming Berlin Biennale.

As always, Flash Art is jam-packed with reviews by correspondents from around the world. This issue includes exhibitions by Aleksandra Mir, Bjorn Melhus, Gabriel Orozco, Kerry James Marshall, Lali Chetwyn, Yoko Ono, Dan Walsh, Laura Horelli, Markus Schinwald, Constantin Zvezdochetov, and a spotlight on Darren Almond. And we haven1t even mentioned the substantial coverage of shows in New York, group exhibitions, previews…
