Between December 14, 2003, and March 14, 2004, the Kunsthalle Dusseldorf shows a comprehensive retrospective of the productions by Fernsehgalerie Gerry Schum (1968-1970) and videogalerie schum (1970-1973). More than twenty years after the exhibition entitled Gerry Schum at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam et al (1979/80), the show in Dusseldorf is the first complete retrospective of one of the most important and complex artistic projects of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In many ways, the history of the Fernsehgalerie Gerry Schum/videogalerie schum is intertwined with the Dusseldorf art and gallery scene, as well as with the history of the Kunsthalle Dusseldorf itself – for instance, through cooperative projects with many artists from the Konrad Fischer Gallery and the shows Prospect 1969 and Prospect 71 Projection (1971) in the Dusseldorf Kunsthalle. From October 1971 until 1973, Dusseldorf was also the site of videogalerie schum, Ratinger Strasse 37.

Besides the “television shows” LAND ART (broadcast on SFB on April 15, 1969, with works by Richard Long, Barry Flanagan, Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Smithson, Marinus Boezem, Jan Dibbets, Walter de Maria and Michael Heizer) and IDENTIFICATIONS (broadcast on SWR on November 30, 1970, with works by Giovanni Anselmo, Joseph Beuys, Alighiero Boetti, Stanley Brouwn, Daniel Buren, Pierpaolo Calzolari, Gino de Dominicis, Ger van Elk, Hamish Fulton, Gilbert & George, Gary Kuehn, Mario Merz, Klaus Rinke, Ulrich Ruckriem, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Richard Serra, Keith Sonnier, Franz Erhard Walther, Lawrence Weiner and Gilberto Zorio), which at the time represented an entirely new form of showing art, Schum’s earlier documentary television productions as well as all productions by videogalerie schum will be presented. Extensive documentary material, much of which has not been published up until now, will broaden the spectrum of the exhibition.

Ulrike Groos, Barbara Hess and Ursula Wevers are the curators of the exhibition. Ursula Wevers was significantly involved from 1968 to 1972 in the Fernsehgalerie Gerry Schum/videogalerie schum productions, having, among other things, photographed them. Most of the works shown in the exhibition come from the Archive Gerry Schum and Ursula Wevers, Cologne.

The exhibition will be supplemented by an extensive publication.

Press conference: Friday, December 12, 1 p.m.

Opening: Saturday, December 13, 8 p.m.

Opening hours: Tue – Sat 12 a.m -7 p.m., Sundays and public holidays 11 a.m.?6 p.m.

Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Serralves, Porto, July 23 – October 10, 2004
