The exhibition presents four large scale works: two new commissions are exhibited alongside the installation Cabinet damateur #2, 2001, in BALTICs fourth floor gallery – 800sqm of art space, flanked by natural light. Northern Stairs, 2001, will be installed outside the building on Baltic square for the duration of the exhibition.
Pedro Cabrita Reis
Pedro Cabrita Reis is one of the most significant artists to emerge from Portugal since the 1980s. His semi-abstract sculptures, paintings and installations recycle everyday found materials to create evocative quasi-architectural art works in which the process of construction is emphasised.
Pedro Cabrita Reis lives and works in Lisbon, he is representing Portugal at the 2003 Venice Biennale. This touring exhibition is a collaboration with Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover, and is guest-curated at BALTIC by Michael Tarantino.
BALTIC
BALTIC The Centre for Contemporary Art opened on 13 July 2002 on the South bank of the River Tyne, Gateshead, in the North of England.
The major new international centre for contemporary art, housed in a former 1950s grain warehouse, has 3000sqm of art space (five galleries), artists studios, a cinema/lecture space, media lab, a library and archive (opening late 2002) and three different food and drink spaces.
With no permanent collection, BALTIC is an art factory; a site for the production, presentation and experience of contemporary art, presenting a constantly changing programme of exhibitions and events, based on artists residencies, new commissions and touring shows.
