Reading by Peter Wegner to Celebrate Publication of New Book

and Exhibition, “Five Years / Five Books: Peter Wegner”

at Printed Matter, Inc., May 30, 2002, 5 to 7 PM

Printed Matter is pleased to announce a reading by New York artist Peter Wegner. The reading, from Wegner’s recently published volume, The Other Today, will open an exhibition of book projects and related works on paper from the last five years. The event will take place on May 30, 2002 at Printed Matter, Inc., located at 535 West 22nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenues, from 5 to 7 PM. A reception will follow the reading, scheduled to begin at 6 PM.

Best known for his paintings, Wegner’s artistic practice often incorporates language and includes a deep commitment to the form of the artists’ book. Both the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Yale University Art Gallery included his books along with his paintings in exhibitions in the last year.

Wegner’s books, notable for their strong conceptual orientation, balance minimalist design and lush materiality. Two earlier books, Remarks on Color and The Blue Books, applied Wittgenstein’s ideas about language and perception to a body of Wegner’s paintings inspired by the common paint chip. In The Other Today, Wegner’s numbered statements read like poetry. “The scraped sky. / The otherwise. / The never enough.”

Wegner’s paintings and works on paper are currently the subject of a solo exhibition at Griffin Contemporary in Los Angeles, the publisher of his two most recent books. His work was last seen in New York at the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea, and can be found in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, and the Dieter and Si Rosenkranz Foundation (Berlin).

Wegner is a graduate of Yale University. He was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and now lives and works in Brooklyn.

The Other Today is priced at $15. All of Wegners books can be found on Printed Matters website, www.printedmatter.org, and at Printed Matters New York City store.
