The SOM Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of the 2022 Structural Engineering Fellowship and 2022 China Fellowship. The Structural Engineering Fellowship was created in 1998 to support research that has the potential to influence the practice and teaching of how structures can positively impact our built environment. The China Fellowship was created in 2006 to support emerging design leaders to broaden their education and contribute to their future professional and academic careers. Applications to both fellowships should address this year’s topic “Envisioning Responsible Relationships with Materiality.”
2022 Structural Engineering Fellowship
The 20,000 USD Structural Engineering Fellowship will be awarded to a graduating student based in the United States who specializes in structural engineering to conduct independent travel and research that contributes to this year’s topic, “Envisioning Responsible Relationships with Materiality.”
This year’s jury will be led by Benton Johnson (Structural Engineering Principal at SOM, Chicago) and will include Karen Scrivener (Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Construction Materials at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), Wil Srubar (Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Colorado Boulder), and Theodore Zoli (Senior Vice President and National Bridge Chief Engineer at HNTB Corporation, New York City; Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, New York City and the University of Notre Dame).

2022 China Fellowship
The 5,000 USD China Fellowship will be awarded to three students in the last two years of either an undergraduate or graduate program in architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, or urban design in the People’s Republic of China to conduct independent travel and research that contributes to this year’s topic, “Envisioning Responsible Relationships with Materiality.”
This year’s jury will be led by Peter Duncan (Practice Leader at SOM, Shanghai) and will include Doreen Heng Liu (Founder and Principal of NODE Architecture & Urbanism; Distinguished Professor at Shenzhen University), Jing Liu (Founder and Principal of SO–IL, New York City), and Kongjian Yu (Founder of the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and the Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor of Design at Peking University, Beijing; Founder of Turenscape, Beijing).
