Liz Craft: Do You Love Me Now?

With Liz Craft’s exhibition, the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven presents the artist’s first major solo show in Europe in 15 years. The works of Liz Craft (born 1970 in Los Angeles) are characterized by an allusive, humorous, surreal, and feminist language. Permeated by Californian pop and counter culture, they often feature psychedelic aspects and cross the boundaries of the eccentric, abject and provocative as much as they address explicit (female) sexuality. Craft comes upon the motifs of her works in daily life, in her surroundings, memories and dreams. Her pieces vacillate between mundane banality and fantastical scenes, they are at once familiar and absurd. In this manner, Craft creates associative spatial narrations in which the real mutates to the surreal and waywardness arises from the prosaic.


Group show featuring Daphne Ahlers, Leda Bourgogne, Evelyn Plaschg and others

The group exhibition of Daphne Ahlers (born 1986), Leda Bourgogne (born 1989), Evelyn Plaschg (born 1988) and others brings together works by young artists whose practices explicitly or implicitly engage with questions and aspects of “female” desire, sexuality and body politics. The show thus builds a bridge to the work of Liz Craft and traces, more in the sense of a common thread than as an express theme, the ways in which a younger generation of artists focusses on and invokes these issues.


Luzie Meyer
July 30–October 2, 2022
Kunsthalle Bremerhaven

With the exhibition of Luzie Meyer (born 1990 in Tübingen), the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven features the first institutional solo show of the artist whose practice ranges from performances, to audio pieces, to films. Meyer’s primary artistic materials are language, voice and music. In her works, she explores the possibility or impossibility of desire, authorship and a “self” that constantly seeks to know itself. In the process, Meyer employs contemporary writing practices, acting and compositional techniques, such as musique concréte, and juxtaposes philosophical ideas with everyday events, creating gaps and interstices, intertwining fiction and reality, in order to question conventional constructions of meaning and sense and generate poetic spaces. A special focus of Meyer’s work is on fathoming the psychology of humans regarding their embeddedness in societal, social conditions and circumstances.


Nora Schultz
October 15, 2022–January 8, 2023
Kunsthalle Bremerhaven

Everyday objects, recording systems and cultural shifts play as much a part in the works of Nora Schultz (born 1975 in Frankfurt am Main) as the observation and critical involvement of the exhibition space and the artist herself. In performative interactions, Schultz often creates large installations that include or entirely integrate the structure of the space. She also deals with production as artistic dynamism in her works, and is less interested in the completed work than in its creation and physical traces. The production process therefore plays a pivotal role in her art and always remains visible. Based on the very peculiar spatial features of the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven, Nora Schultz will develop a new site-specific work for her exhibition there.


Collection presentation
June 12, 2022–February 12, 2023
Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven

The exhibition newly presents the collection of the Kunstverein Bremerhaven von 1886 e.v. for the first time under Stefanie Kleefeld—who has been the director of the Kunsthalle and the Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven since 2021. Based on specific questions, the presentation focuses on displaying works that have not been shown to date and on enabling new or currently relevant perspectives on the collection, and additionally seeks to unfold other and expanded narratives inherent in it.
