Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to host Allora & Calzadilla’s new exhibition. Taking its inspiration from the Caribbean where the artists live and work, the exhibition brings together the installations Penumbra (2020) and Graft (2021) that run throughout the gallery space, as well as three recent works from the series Electromagnetic Field (2018). Grounded in the concrete realities of this complex archipelago, the works in Antille consider how colonialism and ecology intersect with Empire building.
Allora & Calzadilla have collaborated on an extensive body of work since 1995. Through a research-based approach, their work traces the intersections of history, material culture and politics through a wide range of mediums including sculpture, performance, sound, video, and photography. Their work has been exhibited and collected widely in public institutions and private collections. They are the recipients of various prizes, including: The Scientific Merit Award and the Audience Award at the 10th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival in New York (2017); the Gwangju Biennial Prize (2004); Penny McCall Foundation Grant (2003); Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant (2002) and the Cintas Fellowship (2001–02).
