We are thrilled to announce our international open call for The Asymmetry Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chinese and Sinophone Contemporary Art, in partnership with The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London.
About the Postdoctoral Fellowship
Beginning in September 2022, we are offering a fully funded Postdoctoral Fellowship in the innovative Courtauld x Asymmetry Chinese and Sinophone Contemporary Art Research Programme at The Courtauld. The two-year placement is an exciting opportunity for an early career Scholar to pursue new and explorative research in the field of Chinese and/or Sinophone contemporary art and visual culture, broadly understood in its transnational and transversal contexts.
The two-year fellowship will enable the Scholar to work on an independent research project towards publication and/or other significant outputs with mentorship by Dr. Wenny Teo—The Courtauld’s Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Asian Art. Alongside the Fellow’s own academic research, they will further gain valuable teaching experience, participate in the vibrant research culture at The Courtauld and other prominent UK institutions, and assist in the conceptualisation and organisation of The Asymmetry Lecture Series and the annual Asymmetry International Symposium. The fellow will also be immersed in Asymmetry’s diverse network of Curators, Writers and Scholars, contributing to and interacting with, a rich hub of cultural exchange.
Awarded to early career academics with a doctorate in art history or related disciplines and a strong research portfolio in Chinese and/or Sinophone contemporary art, the successful candidate will demonstrate an active and critical engagement with research that includes—but is not limited to—critical histories, multiple geographies, and intersections with issues pertaining to gender, race, the built environment, political ecology, digital culture, and technology. Selected from an open call via The Courtauld, the placement commences in September 2022.
About the programme
As part of a pioneering collaboration between an esteemed institution for art history and a young emerging foundation, the programme will be a unique opportunity for exceptional Scholars to advance and diversify the study of Chinese and Sinophone contemporary art in one the world’s leading centres for history of art and conservation. This dynamic programme will consist of The Asymmetry Postdoctoral Fellowship, a teaching and research post in a world-leading institution, The Asymmetry Lecture Series, a key series of talks as part of The Courtauld Research Forum, and The Asymmetry International Symposium, an annual conference to advance research and debates around contemporary art in China and the Sinophone world.
Asymmetry and The Courtauld are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are warmly welcome to apply as we want to address under-representation. For full information on the open call, the application process, personal specifications and to apply, please visit here to be redirected to The Courtauld’s website.
