Join us in our newly renovated 75,000 square foot Barnes Ogden Art & Design Complex.
At LSU School of Art, we pride ourselves in providing high levels of contact time and studio access, not just a few timetabled hours a week. Be a part of our picture.
Each year we ask our MA/MFA students to share their most exciting experiences at LSU, and their responses are overwhelmingly the same. They talk about our interdisciplinary approach, our spacious work rooms, and our attentive faculty. But most of all, they talk about our close-knit community of makers and thinkers.
LSU School of Art offers two distinct graduate programs of study, each with a vision for excellence in scholarship: the Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art and the Master of Arts in Art History.
The MFA in Studio Arts affords our students the opportunity to individualize their studio practice, empowering them to pursue their vision beside an international faculty of professional working artists, designers, and scholars. Along with access to cutting-edge, state-of-the-art equipment, the LSU School of Art offers stipends and tuition waivers for our graduate assistants; individual studios and large communal workspaces; opportunities to study abroad in Ireland, Italy, the UK, China, and beyond; and an abundance of opportunities to exhibit work at one of our galleries and at the many artistic venues across the region. LSU School of Art offers areas of focus, such as printmaking/bookmaking, sculpture, painting/drawing, photography, ceramics, digital art, and graphic design.
LSU School of Art’s graduate program in art history prepares students for careers in education, museums and curatorial practices, publishing, arts administration, and as preparation for further study at the doctoral level. It also offers an opportunity for continuing education for teachers of art history, history, visual culture, and related subjects. After a foundation of graduate-level coursework and a comprehensive exam, the degree culminates in the completion of a master’s thesis. The goal is to give graduate students the methodological, cultural, and pedagogical training they need for advanced work in art history. It can be completed in four semesters of full-time study as well as part-time within a more flexible timeline.
Louisiana
Known for the unrivaled friendliness of the people, uniquely delicious food, and its distinctly original creative culture, Louisiana has something for everyone—especially artists, designers, and scholars.
City
The high ground above the Mississippi River—in a place 17th-century French explorers called Red Stick—is an environment where landscape, climate, history, and culture allow for a lifestyle that is uniquely suited to the artistic temperament. Here, students develop their talents and refine their vision in a semi-tropical setting that provides fertile ground and unlimited material for an active imagination. Baton Rouge represents the best of Louisiana’s vibrant culture and is a fantastic jumping-off place for exploring the rest of the region.
Climate
The Baton Rouge area has a semi-tropical climate that sets the scene for year-round cultural festivals and activities with mild and short winters, fabulous falls, and glorious springs.
The physical setting of southern Louisiana and the lower Mississippi delta region provides an invaluable resource for creative minds.
Culture
Louisiana has arguably the most colorful history and fascinating culture of any state in the nation. In what other state could you visit the battleground where a ragtag group of soldiers repelled a British invasion with the help of a notorious outlaw pirate? Visitors can learn about many of the most interesting parts of general American history right here in Louisiana. From the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the numerous Audubon nature museums and the National World War II Museum in New Orleans to the Sci-Port Discovery Center in Shreveport, and the countless other museums, art galleries, and cultural and historical sites statewide, there is a lifetime of learning to do in Louisiana.
Apply today for the MFA or MA. Deadline for applications to the LSU School of Art is February 1 for MFA in Studio Arts candidates and March 1 for MA in Art History candidates.
