Classrooom, a teenager view
Curator: Joaquim Moreno
The idea for Classroom, a teenage view, was inspired by the dire condition of a generation that had to experience the transition to adulthood during a pandemic. Two years were enough to create a gap between needs and reality. This archaeology of adolescence was organized through the dominant tool that shaped it in the second half of the 20th century: the classroom. How were these spaces designed? How were these learning communities generated? To what cultural and social ecosystems are they subjected? What made them into political bodies? How have standardisation and transgression shaped artistic education? How does vocational education reorganize relationships between work and knowledge?
Exhibition organized by the Centro Cultural de Belém/Garagem Sul and Plano Nacional das Artes and arc en rêve centre d’architecture e Z33 House of Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture. This project is co-funded by the European Union.
Porto Santo School: A work by Raúl Chorão Ramalho
Curators: Madalena Vidigal and Diogo Amaro
In the 1960s a school was built on the arid and remote island of Porto Santo. Against a backdrop of scarcity, the architect, Raúl Chorão Ramalho, took advantage of the environmental and material conditions of the place to enhance the characteristics of the building. A modern language—in tune with the vanguard of the time—allied itself with the identity of local construction, to anchor the public building to the ground. The school served as a space of learning for several generations of Porto Santo inhabitants, and today, classified as a heritage site, it hosts a programme of activities and artistic residencies that project it into the future. This exhibition presents the environment, matter, habitat and architecture of this singular work.
Exhibition organised by the Centro Cultural de Belém/Garagem Sul and Porta 33.
