Future Belonging - Organizing for Global Change

The Architecture Lobby is excited to announce the return of the Architecture Beyond Capitalism ABC School for 2023—Future Belonging: organising for global change. We call for participants and contributors to join together with the ABC School 2023 to answer the complex problem of how to capture, share, redeploy, and evolve liberatory practices across different scales, contexts and cultures from around the world.
ABC 2023 invites individuals and collectives working to effect change in spatial production and the built environment; working with people, groups, communities or organisations to bring about an equitable tomorrow; or working with new organisational techniques for leveraging influence. We would like to learn from the experiences of others meeting this challenge, and foster a space to support those just starting out.
ABC grew from the ambition within The Architecture Lobby to develop a “school” that shares and deploys new models for educating spatial designers within and beyond the context of capitalism. ABC 2023 will launch the ABC Repository as an extension of the school, an open-source online platform for collecting and sharing global liberatory practices and the unique strategies, techniques and tools they deploy. It calls for participants and contributors to join together in exploring the conceptual space in which the ABC Repository and other efforts to move beyond a capitalist-driven built environment belong. How do we capture, share, redeploy, and evolve liberatory practices from around the world together?
To animate this year’s convening, we have begun the process of mapping the space of “Architecture Beyond Capitalism” and also invite submissions of alternative maps and strategies for elaborating this field. Where do various aligned organizations sit on our terrain map? Are there other maps? We hope this map—and others submitted—will provide a valuable tool for locating and relating practices and their supporting discourses.
The 2023 ABC School will take place online from September 16–30 across multiple time zones. The conference is free, online and worldwide open to anyone passionate about affecting change - even if, like us, you’re not sure how.
