September 8–October 14, 2023
Curated by, Vienna‘s gallery festival featuring international curators, will enter its 15th round from September 8 to October 14 2023. Since its formation in 2009, the gallery festival has become a central event for contemporary art in Austria. Curated by, which brings together both established and young galleries, annually presents contemporary positions selected by international curators on an overarching theme. After last year‘s selection of the theme was made by an initiator, this year once again the issue and title were decided democratically between all participating galleries.
The Neutral
“What does it mean to be neutral? Can we really afford to choose neutrality as a guiding principle for political action?“
With the epochal change a year ago, the question and the concept of the neutral, of neutrality, have been forced back into the center of political and cultural attention. How can one be neutral now, is often heard. Or: Those who promote neutrality in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine are, on the contrary, taking a stand. “Not an easy stance for neutrality, indeed,“ as Maximilian Geymüller notes in the impulse text for this year‘s theme.
In the art world, the ideas of the neutral, the in-between, and the non-binary have been generating resonances and positions for quite some time.
The impulse essay by Maximilian Geymüller is available for download on our website (curatedby.at/impulse).

In its fifteen years of existence, the gallery festival Curated by has developed into a central and indispensable event for contemporary art in Vienna, which – supported by selected Vienna-based galleries – has become an international showcase for the city. The focus on content through the annual theme, the international orientation through the choice of curators and artists, the unusual format as a festival, and the collaborative shoulder-to-shoulder approach of the galleries make Curated by a unique contemporary art project with international reach.
