Professorship: Art in Social Spaces

The Institute of Performative Practice, Art and Education at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) is looking to appoint a University Professor for Art in Social Spaces (salary scale: W2) from April, 1 2027. Deadline for applications is May, 31 2026.

The successful applicant will be appointed as a civil servant in accordance with German civil service regulations, if applicable, or otherwise as an employee. This is a permanent appointment.

The professorship is intended to embody an artistic practice that focuses on the spaces in which people live and interact, demonstrating a conscious positioning within contemporary artistic discourse and transcending Eurocentric perspectives. The central themes of the professorship are questions of accessibility; how concepts of public spaces emerge or are created; and the site-specificity of different perspectives. These key themes will be embedded in a discrimination-critical artistic endeavour, in which artistic practices may be understood as intervention or collaboration, as alliances with specific social spaces, or as arising out of these. Social spaces may be, for example, places where people meet, artistic spaces, neighbourhoods, residential districts, language and media communities, cultural and/or artistic initiatives and groups with shared interests or needs, self-organised public spaces or public institutions. All of these may act as catalysts for artistic ideas.

The professorship is intended to focus in particular on the intersections between educational contexts and art. It will represent an understanding of art that is orientated towards the connections between contemporary art and art education. Teaching will focus on artistic practice for students enrolled on the bachelor’s degree in Art Education and on the master’s degree in Teaching Art in Schools (“Gymnasium” level), and will support students in using the entire spectrum of medial and material processes and to engage in collaborative forms of working.
