University professor for Art Education and Inclusion

The Institute of Performative Practice, Art and Education at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK Braunschweig) is looking to appoint a University Professor for Art Education and Inclusion (salary scale: W2) from April 1, 2027. Application deadline: June 30, 2026

This is a permanent appointment. The successful applicant will be appointed as a civil servant in accordance with German civil service regulations, if applicable, or otherwise as an employee.

At HBK Braunschweig, art can be studied as a minor subject within the bachelor degree “Special Needs Education” (Bachelor of Arts) and the master’s degree “Special Needs Education for Schools” (Master of Education). These are dual-subject degrees offered jointly by the Institute for Performative Practice, Art and Education (IPKB) and the Leibniz University Hanover (LUH). The major subject, Special Needs Education, is taught at LUH. Art as the minor subject is taught from both an artistic and a theoretical perspective. HBK Braunschweig is working towards linking the degrees more closely to the existing degrees at the IPKB that include modules from Art Education.

Teaching art as part of a degree in special needs education at a university of the arts, requires the development of critical faculties and teaching skills in close interrelationship with contemporary art, artistic practices and aesthetics.

Creative and artistic projects will take place both on an individual level and in collaboration with others, in a practice that is reflectively and systematically linked to theoretical discourses from art and art theory, philosophy, the media and history, and situated within current social debates. Experimental work that interrogates the aesthetics of different art forms, documentation techniques and the curation and organisation of exhibitions, requires the use of a diverse range of artistic processes, media and materials. HBK Braunschweig is currently engaged in expanding its networks with other educational institutions such as schools, workshops, galleries and museums (at regional, national and international level), as well as other universities and art colleges.

The tasks of the new professor for Art Education and Inclusion will be
–Teaching and research in art as a minor subject in dual-subject degrees with Special Needs Education
–Testing new ways in which art can be taught inclusively, conveying these to students and embedding such practices within the IPKB as it continues to develop
–Working across different disciplines and departments within the IPKB and across HBK Braunschweig
–Participating in research projects and other forms of collaboration with organisations tasked with implementing special needs teaching—such as schools and the WfbM (Workshop for People with Disabilities)—and with artistic and cultural institutions.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate the following experience and qualifications:
–A research focus on art education and inclusion
–Proven expertise in areas relating to contemporary discourses around, for example, digitalisation and post-digitalisation
–A collaborative and interdisciplinary way of working that encourages network-building
–Knowledge of discourses in relation to the future of schools, discrimination-critical practices in art and art education, and inclusion
–A conscious awareness of the intersections between art and educational contexts
–Willingness to actively engage in academic self-governance
–Proven competence in German to at least C1 level of the Common European Reference Framework
