Braunschweig Projects 2027/28

Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) is an artistic-scientific university with the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral qualifications. With around 1,000 students in the fields of fine arts, art education, performing arts, design, visual communication, art history and media studies, it is one of the largest art academies in Germany.

With the programme Braunschweig Projects, HBK Braunschweig offers seven twelve-months fellowships & art residencies on behalf of the State of Lower Saxony for the year 2027/28 (five scholarships in the field of fine arts / two scholarships in the field of sound art).

Braunschweig Projects are part of the university’s and the state’s promotion of emerging artists and also serve to internationalise HBK. They are aimed at artists who would like to work on a project in the immediate vicinity of HBK Braunschweig. With their project proposal, fellows should make a significant contribution towards the further development of forms of artistic practice.

Fellows are expected to participate in the Welcome Weeks (April 19–30, 2027) and in a joint final presentation in January/February 2028. At the end of the fellowship, a short final report must be submitted.

Funding is provided in form of stipends in the amount of 1,600 EUR per month. A studio apartment will be available rent-free. A contribution of 250 EUR per month towards incidental living costs must be paid. There will be an allowance for project and travel costs. During the funding period, fellows are required to reside at HBK for at least eight months during the lecture period in the summer and winter semesters. The funding period will begin on April 1, 2027.

A requirement for the fellowship is a successfully completed art degree. The most recent studies must have been completed after March 31, 2016 and before April 1, 2023. Applicants must be able to show proof of extensive artistic practice. A fellowship cannot be granted if the applicant is receiving regular benefits from third parties.
