Azkuna Zentroa—Alhóndiga Bilbao is the society and contemporary culture centre of Bilbao (Basque Country), with a local and international outreach, open to dialogue with the different communities of audiences.
This cultural project is set in the Alhóndiga (1909–1977), the city’s old wine and oil warehouse. It is a modernist 43,000 m2 building reconverted into a cultural centre. Its external classicism style contrasts with today’s interior contemporary habitat created by the French designer Philippe Starck.
Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao connects society to contemporary culture through six programme lines: contemporary art, live arts, film & audiovisuals, society, digital cultures and literature. They all dialogue among each other to generate an expanded and multiple hybrid programme, which favours the everyday nature of that which is contemporary, with mediation and education as channels to generate critical knowledge and transform society through art and artists.
